Scottish Oats with Stewed Pears and Apples

I have cooked a lot of rolled oats and steel cuts oats, but I have to admit that this was my first time ever cooking Scottish Oats (Camas Country Mill). I am now in love with Scottish oats now. They are extremely hearty but have a bit of a fluffier consistency than steel cut oats. […]

Oregon September Challenge

My family decided last month that it would be fun to try to eat only Oregon grown (mostly willamette valley) grown/raised food for the whole month of September. At first I was super excited about the idea as I really value eating whole foods and local eating, but I soon realized that it would take […]

Wow, Kara! You’ve done so much work already! I know that I’ll be referring back to this post to remember what kinds of things I can try to find locally. I’m looking forward to following along! If other people are interested, I’d love to see some comparison pricing on a few things (the grains, eg., and I had no idea we could get local rice – awesome!). If you have a favorite recipe or two from the experiment (and I know how loose recipes can be), I’d love that, too!

The Real Housewives of Benton County: Sara Egbert “Mother Nature”

I am so excited to be back doing this interview series! Although this is a project that I simply did not have time to continue as my schedule got busier, it never left my heart. With so much focus these days on what is wrong with the world, I want to show evidence of all […]

Thanks for the interview, Kara. I’m glad I met this great mama while she was here this summer. She does exude that comfortable feel toward nature, her kids and other people that you can sense in this interview. I’m excited to read more interviews in the future!

Kara and Chris- Thank you so much for capturing my kiddos and I in word and pictures. You two are such a dynamic duo with your love of people and beauty.

When Sara and I were friends as high schoolers, we got to spend a week traveling in Italy with our choir. During that week Sara taught me to embrace silliness, and just to enjoy life and to take myself much less seriously. As a mother, there is so much more she could teach me about lightening up and embracing the dirt :) Wish you lived in Corvallis full time, Sara! Thank you for making such a positive impact on my life when we were kids…and for continuing to inspire me!

School Gardens

This last spring, Sofia was able to participate in garden club at her school. The Lincoln Garden is run through my work (The Healthy Youth Program), and Amoreena did such an amazing job with the kids. Amoreena was set to give a presentation at the school board meeting in June, and she asked Sofia if […]

Lovely, I hope you got some pictures of Chris. You need to take the camera from him once in awhile. I want to hear more details about the trip when the day comes that we see each other in person. I think we live in the same city right?

Kara - April 11, 2014 - 10:36 am

Cherie,
We did get some pics of Chris, but it looks like they ended up only on facebook. But… I definitely should get more. We got a few cute family shots that also didn’t end up on here I just noticed. You probably are more aware of this than the average person being the one behind the camera :). Life has a funny way these days that keeps me pretty busy, so I am so excited to see you tonight!!

Kara,
I’m so glad you had an amazing time. I love that amongst your highlights are seeing the animals that I have spent more than a decade studying. It’s a great reminder of the passion that brought me here and the joy of sharing it. Did Sophia tell you about the spinner dolphin feeding videos I showed her when she and Chris visited and what the fish they eat look like under the microscope? I hope seeing them live helped make the science real for her, too.
