4th of July and Running Progress

On the 4th of July, I woke up to this cute baby. Then my friend Leonne and I ran this 5k downtown. There a couple of things about this picture that really make me laugh. I love how my face looks all serious like I am finishing a marathon or something, when no, I am […]

You rock Kara! Great job on the race.
My exercise goals are to do a different workout dvd 4-5 times a week. I usually do it when Oscar is down for his first nap, Iris is just up and fed and is in a good enough mood to just chill under a mobile, and Betty wants to work out with me. I have lost 12 pounds (and all the baby weight) in the last month doing this and cutting back from my pregnancy menu of chocolate milkshakes and onion rings.

Good job Emma! I am impressed that you do videos while juggling 3 kids. You must be very self disciplined. I feel like I want to leave the house and take a break when I exercise, but it is smart to find time during the day!! Oh man, I still like my desserts. I am definitely going to have to break these bad habits before I am done nursing, because I have a feeling that I will gain weight once I’m done if I don’t make some changes.

I’ll have to admit that I’m a little jealous that 5ks are “quick and easy” for you, lol. That 4th of July 5k was my first 5k ever…I thought I might have recognized you speeding past me at some point :)

My goal right now is to keep running, and to not feel like 3.1 miles is the equivalent of a marathon. In the first couple days after having my son without drugs, I was convinced I could do ANYTHING! I just try to remember that “on-top-of-the-world-I-can-do-anything” feeling when I’m running to keep me going. Even a half-marathon seems like such a lofty goal at this point, but I’d love to accomplish that someday!

Oh, I still eat desserts, just not chocolate milkshakes. I like the Wal-Mart ice cream sandwiches in peanut butter. I have to do the individual servings on desserts otherwise I am eating a whole pint of Ben and Jerry’s.
And I too am jealous of your 5k being quick and easy. I have always hated running. I used to be able to swim a mile easier than I could run one. I want to like to run, but it will be battle to get there.

Elisabeth,
Maybe I made myself sound more in shape and cool than I actually am :). When I say “quick and easy,” I am just comparing that to a half marathon. The 5k was not actually super easy since I was trying to run faster, but it was definitely much easier than what I will be facing in a 6 weeks. Maybe I should have signed up for a bunch of 5ks instead :)

I like 5Ks too, but I don’t like how they really end up being on ly 25 minutes of exercise! 10k’s might be my favorite. Half-marathons are crazy hard. I still say I’ll do a marathon someday, but it probably really would kill me. :)

Right now I weight train for about 30 minutes a day (carrying kids on my front or back), cardio for about an hour (rushing up and down the stairs to get out the door on time, or just to get out the door with everyone halfway decent), and if I’m lucky I get to go for a walk once a week. I’m trying to run once a week – lofty goal I know. I wish I could find/make time to exercise, but seriously, caring for 3 kids, as you know, is a lot of physical activity and draining all in itself. I can run a 5k way easier after having a baby and not having run for 9+ months than I could when I was in high school (I guess I was a sad high schooler), Although it’s not “exercise” it sure does help to keep me physically fit, and I mean that. So all of you moms can add “I’m a mom 24/7″ to your exercise list!

Haha Kara, I don’t know you except through blogging and our five minute conversation, but I’m sure you are just as “in shape and cool” as you sound. I mean, an 8.5 minute pace is awesome in my opinion (especially post-baby), I’m happy if I can get 10 minutes! On a side note, I’m pretty sure that is my nephew with the white/red/navy shorts on the far right of your race pic, I just noticed it…I remember him running about an 8.5 minute pace so that would make sense :)

Sarabeth,
I agree with 10ks being awesome. You have to be in decent shape, but not amazing shape to run them. You can set time goals and probably not burn out like in a half marathon. We should do one together. Let’s meet in Portland sometime!!
Kelsey,
I agree that 3 kids can keep you movin and groovin all day. With that said, I am always amazed at how wimpy my arms are after carrying around big chunky babies everywhere. You would think that my arms would be buff.
Elisabeth,
I love that your nephew is in the picture. Ha… I bet we are all “that random person” in the background of someone’s picture on their blog :). Elisabeth, come run with me sometime. Trust me… I usually go nice and slow!

Kara, I ran that race too! I saw you but didn’t get a chance to say hi. You’re right – there were some crazy speedy little kids in that race. I barely struggled past a few 11- year olds near the finish who were running close to a 7:30 minute mile. At the finish!!! I was shocked. That was a fun race though…my first 5k! I hope to run into you at more 5k’s this summer!

kara - July 13, 2011 - 7:19 pm

Wait Rachel, you ran a 7:30 mile pace in your first 5K???? Ha… if so, you will be passing me a lot in races. Let me know of other local races that you hear about. I would be up for a 10k as well!

Rachel Prickett - July 13, 2011 - 10:28 pm

The next one I’m running is the Out to the Ballgame 5k on 7/27. Keith ran it last year and it’s a lot of fun! You get free admission to the Knights game if you run, and everybody brings their family. You should try to come…it would be fun to see you.
What half marathon are you training for? During that 5k, I was thinking, “This is so hard! I can’t believe anyone voluntarily runs 13 miles!” So, hats off to you, girlfriend!

Rachel,
Sounds fun. I will plan on running it, but maybe not quite with you if you are running 7:30 miles :).

Annalise - July 14, 2011 - 7:13 pm

Kara!! Will you PLEASE do a 10K with me this coming Saturday (in 2 days) in Jefferson? I run 11-min pace, so you can take it easy and chat it up with me. please?? I don’t have anyone else! email me!

kara - July 14, 2011 - 9:57 pm

Annalise,
I totally would, but Saturdays are bad in general during the summer since Chris always has weddings!
