Chubby Love

I dare you to try to look at these pictures and not smile. I think it is nearly impossible. Can you even stand how precious she is? A big prize for the person who can correctly count the number of rolls on that baby stomach. People are always shocked when they find out how […]

is that velcro on those cloth diapers? did you make them? if so I have a few questions for you. :)

kara - May 31, 2011 - 7:27 am

It is velcro. I didn’t make these, but my friend and I made some like them (Okay… I actually did the cutting, and she did the sewing). I am not a seamstress, but they were really easy for her. I think she actually modeled them after the Happy Heiny cloth diapers.

Missy - May 31, 2011 - 7:49 am

Oh my goodness. LOVE the rolls and all the slobber! What a (big) doll!

Amanda O. - May 31, 2011 - 10:29 am

Yep, she is Grayson’s perfect match… We need to have a playdate soon :)

adrienne w - May 31, 2011 - 1:46 pm

Those are adorable rolls! It’s so funny because Geneva is our chunkiest baby as well, but that’s not saying much for our kids. She doesn’t compare to Miriam’s chunkification! All of Geneva’s rolls are in her diaper, which is adorable in it’s own way. She’s our first baby to actually be in the size of clothes to match her age! And she’s only 5 pounds less than Vienna who will be 3 in a month!
I love to squish the chubby babies, because I haven’t had any of those. But I love to snuggle my skinny, little, busy babies just as much!

Jeanette - May 31, 2011 - 2:53 pm

What a kid and totally kissable! Amazing pictures, thanks for sharing your cutie! Love and miss you tons.

carolina amador - May 31, 2011 - 9:01 pm

Dude, I love that she has boobies!

kara - May 31, 2011 - 10:29 pm

Yes, she is a cute slobbery little thing.
Does Grayson like curvy women :)?
Adrienne, glad you get to experience 1 chubby baby. I don’t think I produce skinny babies, so I am afraid chubby will be all that I know, but your babies are cuties as well :).
Miss you too!!
She totally has little boobies.

betsy - May 31, 2011 - 11:18 pm

I love chunky babies. Cute, cute baby!

Adrienne S - June 1, 2011 - 7:58 am

I am going through withdrawls looking at these!

10 by Memorial Day Challenge Review!!!

Today is Memorial Day, and that means that it is time to review how I did with my goal of losing 10 pounds. Drum roll please…… I have lost a solid 7 pounds since starting the challenge. Yes, I realize that I am 3 pounds from my goal, but I am still happy.  7 pounds […]

adrienne w - May 30, 2011 - 1:43 pm

Way to go!! I think that 7 lbs is a great accomplishment.

Missy - May 31, 2011 - 7:55 am

Ha! I was thinking about this just 2 days ago (the day before Memorial Day), and for some reason, thinking I still had some time to lose a few more pounds. D’oh! I think I lost 5. Maybe 6. Thanks for the challenge. I wasn’t very good about avoiding the sweets – that’s always my downfall. And I haven’t been very good about exercising the last couple of weeks. I think it’s good to set goals with deadlines though because just a goal of “I want to lose 10 pounds” doesn’t really stick with you (me) unless there’s a date by which you want to lose it.
Good for you, on the 7 pounds! And you looked totally great at the open house. I would have guessed way more than 7. You must be building back some muscle with all that walking and running. :)

Rachel - May 31, 2011 - 2:45 pm

I never got past that first 3 pounds. :( But, at least I didn’t gain! I am on week 2 of the Couch to 5K so we’ll if that has any impact. Not feeling too good about myself these days. I am hoping the new hair will change my perspective.

kara - May 31, 2011 - 10:53 pm

Good job on 5 Missy!! Sweets are my weakness as well. This is said as I just finished my ice cream :).
I totally get that at times, not gaining can be a success! You are awesome, and I have a good feeling about what you will accomplish this summer!

stop complaining

My neighbor Sara (from Sara Lil photography) and I have been going walking together early in the mornings. Towards the end of our walk, we see this stop sign. I love it, and it is a great reminder for me at the beginning of the day. I totally think that it can be therapeutic to […]

I agree! After all we’ve been through in the last few years, I’ve tried really hard not to complain. I have so much to be thankful for and there is always someone who is struggling more. I also think there is nothing worse than someone complaining about fairly insignificant problems. That being said, sometimes it’s nice to vent, like you said, but I think it should be done to a selective audience.

kara - May 30, 2011 - 2:34 pm

See, I think you have many more reasons to complain than I do :). I am so impressed with how you handle everything you have going on!

How to dress your kids cute—–garage sale style

This is Sofia’s total fake laugh face. Miriam proudly showing off her garage sale outfit. Okay, maybe Miriam doesn’t care, but doesn’t she look cute? Okay, this picture has nothing to do with garage sales, but isn’t this Wisteria from our yard beautiful? Gabe dressed in his garage sale clothes from head to toe. Hi, […]

EmmaJ - May 26, 2011 - 6:54 am

I would like to shop at garage sales, but I have never had much luck at them, so now I just don’t bother. It seems like the ones I go to just never have nice quality stuff.

Elisabeth@SimpleGreenishLiving - May 26, 2011 - 11:05 am

I love when there are garage sales in or around my neighborhood, that way I can just check them out when we’re on a walk, rather than making a special trip. Last weekend we found a Sandra Boynton board book for just 25 cents! She is one of our favorite children’s authors so this was a great find for us (especially considering the books cost around $8 new). Now that we have a little one who seems to grow out of things so quickly, I will definitely be garage sale-ing more often :)

Sarabeth - May 26, 2011 - 11:33 am

I love the idea of garage sales, but it seems like every one we go to just has a bunch of, well, junk. The kids clothes always seem worn and stained. It sounds like garage sales in your area are much better!

Rachel - May 26, 2011 - 1:16 pm

By best score was a $150 authentic all wood Bocce set for $10. But, I’m kind of over garage sales. I am more of a Craigslist person. The stuff seems to be better quality, you know the price up front, and you can shop or sell from your couch. You don’t get the SUPER good deals, but I got a Pump in Style for $50, a Moby for $20, tons of cloth diapers, etc. Every time I do a garage sale, I spend two days setting up and tearing down and make about $50. But, I sold about $1500 worth of stuff on Craigslist when we moved to Corvallis all out of my garage. I love CL!

Diana - May 26, 2011 - 1:33 pm

My favorite garage sale find was Hazel’s brand new condition highchair for $5 and her baby gym for $2. I think I saved over $50. I love Craigslist and the best story I have is that I was selling my brand new medela pump in style and no one would bite, so I lowered the price well below what I knew I could get because I needed the money. Sure enough a woman called and asked why I was selling it so low. I told her and she said she wanted it for her newborn son who had a cleft palette and couldn’t feed from the breast. I felt so good about selling it low price to her, but when her husband showed up he gave me $60 extra dollars!

kara - May 26, 2011 - 2:53 pm

Emma, there have to be some amazing garage sales in D.C!! You just have to find the right neighborhoods. That is a huge part is just knowing what areas to search.
I have found some good garage sales in your neighborhood!! Don’t they have a weekend where a bunch of people in your neighborhood have sales?
Are there any major universities in Tacoma? Find out where professor families live.. those are usually good sales :). Or big fancy suburbia neighborhoods where people buy their kids lots of stuff.
I totally love craigslist too. We bought our little play wooden house, our play structure from our yard, and even our van off of craigslist :)
That is a great story. How nice!

adrienne w - May 26, 2011 - 4:04 pm

Love the deals you got! I’m not into garage sale-ing very much, because it often ends up being a lot of work for very little end result. But a couple of weeks ago we got 2 bikes and 2 scooters for $65, which may not sound like a great deal, but it was. I love second hand shopping more than garage sales though!! I have scored some great deals. I am willing to try more garage sales though in the right neighborhood.

Claire - May 26, 2011 - 9:16 pm

Since you are the self declared garage sale goddess…you will need to set up a ‘killer garage sale’ notification service!

Elisa - May 26, 2011 - 10:24 pm

YES…Garage Sale Goddess!!! I love that!

Elisa - May 26, 2011 - 10:37 pm

By the way….Sofia is a your “mini-me” !!!!!!

kara - May 26, 2011 - 10:53 pm

That does sound like a good deal considering you could pay at least that much for one of those items new. I love thrift stores too. My sister Heather is the thrift store goddess. Eugene has way better thrift stores than Corvallis (our goodwill is super spendy for some reason).
I so wish I could alert everyone. Do you know how many times I have gone to a garage sale and found things that were amazing but that I didn’t need? I sit there and try to think of who I should call!! Maybe I should have a garage sale twitter club :).
I really will keep my eye out for some stuff for you. Oh, and could you email me the dates you will be here again?? I’m not sure if Sofia is my “mini me” in looks exactly, but it will crack you up when you are here to see how much she acts like me :).

E - May 27, 2011 - 11:52 am

Will you be my family’s personal shopper?

kara - May 27, 2011 - 3:28 pm

I totally should become a personal shopper and charge like 20% commission :). It would still be a good deal for the client :).

Amanda O. - May 27, 2011 - 4:19 pm

Hey I’d LOVE to hit yard sales but need a partner to sit in the car with the baby haha. Do you leave the kids at home or take em in and out of the car each time? Sounds like a lot of work to do that ;)Do you get your yard sale leads from CL or the newspaper or word of mouth?

kara - May 27, 2011 - 5:15 pm

I usually have to bring my kids since Chris has weddings most saturdays in the summer.. which means I will probably be doing less garage saling this summer. I usually do drive bys to see if it looks like a good one before I drag my kids out of the car with me. I do newspaper, cl, and word of mouth :).

Sonia - June 1, 2011 - 4:19 pm

I’m the sucker who just paid full price for a pair of kid’s Keens…that said, I love yard sales, goodwill, and replay for children’s items. Nice finds!

What a terrific blog Kara! You really both amaze me.

Wendy M - May 25, 2011 - 8:48 am

I am fortunate to call Marianne a good friend…the number one thing I love about her is that she is always up-front and honest. The way she has gracefully handled all of George’s health issues just floors me. Overall, she is an amazing and talented person. Love ya, Marianne! :-)

adrienne w - May 25, 2011 - 9:14 am

You know some really amazing and cool people!!

Kim Hall - May 25, 2011 - 10:21 am

Aw, I love the freezie pop story! What an inspiring woman!

juliette - May 25, 2011 - 1:21 pm

Could anyone be cooler than Ma-yanne? No, I don’t think so.

Diana - May 25, 2011 - 3:25 pm

Thank you Kara for thinking of the single moms out there! It really means a lot to read something about another single mom who is trying to do it right! It is refreshing because, like Marianne said- it can be kind of hard when all your friends have marriages and I like how she says it’s inspiring for her.

kara - May 25, 2011 - 7:00 pm

You are sweet Heidi.
Kim, the freezie pop story totally got me too.
Juliette, that is still how Gabe says her name too :).
Diana, you are also an amazing single mom. I have been very impressed with you since I met you!! Hazel is a lucky girl.

carolina amador - May 25, 2011 - 9:39 pm

She is an awesome momma! And I love her little George too!

Ivy - May 25, 2011 - 10:54 pm

Marianne and I were in the same department!
She is an amazing mom. (So do you, Diana!)

Heather Wilson - May 26, 2011 - 3:01 pm

I love the photos of Marianne, she is so beautiful. Nice interview Kara.

Jill Staples - May 26, 2011 - 5:42 pm

Way to go Marianne! I know how hard it can be when everyone around you is married, but I have no doubt you’re going to find the perfect man for you!!

Vicky - May 26, 2011 - 7:17 pm

What a fabulous interview. My daughter amazes me everyday. She seems to be at her finest when pressure is the worst. I’m so happy to hear all her wonderful friends saying such beautiful things about this wonderful woman. As I am crying writing this, I would just applaude Marianne and tell her she has a long fabulous life ahead.

Sunny - May 27, 2011 - 7:09 pm

Marianne you are as always a rock star. I admire you for many reasons and would just like to second what everyone else has said!

Kris - May 27, 2011 - 10:55 pm

Good Stuff….must be if I further than the pics. Glad to see you slowly weening yourself off the little yellow guys.

Alyssa White - May 29, 2011 - 9:23 pm

Marianne, you have always inspired me. I honestly don’t know how you do it all. The story was so great, Kara, as is this blog! I was tearing up at the freezie pop story. So sweet.

Bonnie - May 30, 2011 - 8:24 pm

I just met you the other day and you were so sweet (I was the one forgetting my baby in the car seat at the indoor park). By the end of this article I am crying, your attitude toward life is inspiring to me, and what your son said about you loving freezie pops more than your computer makes me want to throw away all my crap so I can enjoy my children! Thank you for sharing yourself with us all!

Adrienne S - June 1, 2011 - 7:52 am

Oh Marianne! I’m getting misty reading this. Your such a great mom!
