Crazy Mom Leaves Town

I remember when I was a kid how stressed out my mom was when we were trying to get ready to leave town. I never understood why she insisted that we clean the house and why she seemed to be so uptight. Well folks, I have become my mother. You know how people hire movers who come and  pack your entire house and you have to do almost nothing? I wish that they had people like that who would come and pack and get your house ready to leave town. Here are a several (but not all) of the things that I did in preparation to leave for a week at the lake with family:

  • Mow lawn
  • Water lawn
  • Water garden and plants really good
  • Feed chickens and change water
  • Make cookie dough to take with me so I can bake cookies later in the trip for everyone
  • Make zucchini bread to share with family
  • Call and make appointments that I have been meaning to make for a long time (like Miriam’s 6 month appointment that she will be having at 7 months).
  • Do all of the laundry. I do not want to come home from a trip to dirty laundry.
  • Go to the store to buy snack foods for the trip.
  • Make the dry part of pancakes at home so that I can make pancakes for all of the families.
  • Find people to teach Sunday School Lessons for Chris and I while we are gone
  • Find someone to come and water and feed chickens
  • Empty all of the trash from the house and roll garbage cans out
  • Clean the house to the best of my ability
  • Borrow camping pads from a friend
  • Pack warm clothes, swimming suites, underwear, summer clothes, toiletries, etcc…. for everyone in my family. I also try to remember all of those “Just in case” things like diaper rash cream.
  • Charge cell phone and ipod. Travel would just not be fun without good music.
  • Remember to pack coloring books and the “Madeline” stories for the kids to listen to while we travel.
  • Pick my sister Kris up and her daughter in Eugene to ride with us.

Okay, I’m sure there are even more details that I am leaving out, but you get the idea. Chris was off shooting a wedding the day that we left, so I had to figure out a way to do most of this while juggling the kids. Are you all crazy when you are getting ready to leave town? Am I the only one who feels really overwhelmed with how much work it is to leave? I’m very glad that we went to hang out with family, and we had an amazing time, but life is so different with kids. Remember when vacation was relaxing? I may come home feeling like I need a vacation from my vacation, but I wouldn’t trade these memories for anything. Lots of pictures from our reunion coming soon!

I am so uptight about travelling. I’m the crazy one who wants to allow time to be at the airport three hours ahead of the flight. I never start packing early enough, so I always forget something and am a stressed out mess. That’s probably why we never go anywhere.

I wish we could stay home more, but I have a big family with lots of people and cousins to see who live out of the area. Glad to hear there are other stress cases like me :)

This is SO me!! Steve still makes fun of me for the time several years back when I was stressing just before leaving for a trip, and right before we walked out the door I just had to straighten this newspaper pile we had. Looking back, I suppose that was a bit overly-anal, but I seriously loathe coming home to a messy house! And now with 3 kids, it seems the list to get ready to go is endless, and it’s that much harder to get done. Guess I’m not the only one!
