Travel Tunes

This has been a month of family, travel, exhaustion, and fun. I will jump back on the blogging band wagon more in a week or so, but I was just wondering who people listen to on their ipods in their cars when they travel. My music on my playlists varies a lot, but  on any playlist, there will almost always be music by: The Indigo Girls, India Arie, The Dixie Chicks, and Ingrid Michaelson. People would laugh if they saw how random my lists are. I have everything from musicals and folk music to R&B. We always listen to a ton of good kids’s music when we travel, but I always find it really amusing which songs from my playlist my kids sing along to and ask to be repeated. Here is the list of some of the current songs that either both or one of my older kids like singing along to:

  1. “Jolene” by Dolly Parton. Now this song is a classic. I dare you to try singing along without making an emotional/strange face. There may even be a fist held up in air and eyes closed to portray extra emotion.
  2. Both of my kids also love singing along to “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele.
  3. “Hey Soul Sister” by Train is always a party pleaser in any car ride.
  4. “I Feel the Earth Move” by Carol King has recently become a favorite dance song in the car. I know… we are super cool.
  5. Sofia loves singing along to “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson and also “The Power of Two” by The Indigo Girls.”
  6. My kids love singing along to tons of children music, but their current favorite song by Elizabeth Mitchell (one of the best children’s singers)  “Ooki Na Kuri No Ki No Shita De (Under the Big Chestnut Tree)”

Which songs have been sing along favorites that  you have had on repeat in the car this summer?

I’ve listened to more Little Mermaid than I care to this summer, but other than that…my kids like rolling in the deep as well. And that song that says, “tonight, tonight….something, something all over the world” — maybe? I’m not good with lyrics. Can’t think of any others at the moment.

Our travel music always includes a bit of everything. Usually U2 and Depeche Mode, the Beatles (which was our traveling music growing up), plenty of various country music, Les Miserables, sometimes Peter, Paul and Mary and Neil Diamond (which was Denver’s family’s traveling music growing up)and a little random Hip Hop and R&B. The kids often pick the Mamma Mia and Hairspray soundtracks. If I’m driving, I have to be able to sing along.

Do you sing a long to the little mermaid?
Nice mix… it would make sense that you would have an eclectic mix as well. I would listen to all of that music as well!
