The Case for Mom Pants

I’m definitely not the coolest and most stylish gal in the world these days, but I was for sure a little funkier pre-kids. I know I definitely wouldn’t have worn pants even remotely close to the ones in the picture. Folks, I am here to tell you that I have had a change of heart. I am not as afraid of mom jeans as I used to be. In fact, I’m sure almost every mom reading this understands why women wear them. They do a nice job of holding in our flabby bellies, enabling us to sport tighter tops. I know that the flat/heart shaped mom butt is not flattering by any means, but neither is the muffin top that hangs over low rise jeans (and at this point, I am talking about a Costco sized muffin top :). Really, it is choosing between the lesser of two evils. Let’s face the fact ladies, I think that only about 15% of women can pull of low rise jeans in the first place, and of those 15%, only 5% are moms. I am on a mission to find the cutest mom pants. I saw some pretty cute high rise pants at banana republic the other day. Have any of you had ┬áluck of finding the perfect balance of mid/high rise pants without being too incredibly dorky? If so, please share! I say mothers united for mom jeans!!

Is it me, or are the “mom jeans” not a far cry from skinny jeans? I mean, wear a long top and I don’t think that many people would know the difference! So, Kara, I say go for it! Ha-ha!

In a similar vein, now that I’m on the other side of motherhood, I see the merits of elastic waistbands! I always wondered why there was that specific section in department stores dedicated to pantalones with the bunched stretchy stuff, and at what point to women bridge over to that section?

Then, I bought my first pair of maternity pants. The heavens opened, and I saw the light – elastic waistbands are awesome!! I wore those jeans with the thick elastic waistband for as long as I could justify them because they were so darn comfortable. Alas, all of the maternity pants are stuffed away in storage, but I look forward to unpacking them someday.

Getting back to your question, I sadly have no suggestions. But, summer’s coming, so I’ll be throwing on a skirt! :-)

Skinny jeans totally are mom pants. I never thought of that. Like you, the heavens also opened with maternity pants. I also love some leggings with a tunic! 2 1/2 months postpartum, and I can still hardly handle wearing pants with button/zipper. I try to tell myself that if I at least try to find more stylish work out pants, it is cool to wear them almost every day??
I definitely need to find a couple of cute skirts for the summer as dresses don’t work so well with nursing. Oh, and I also look forward to when you will be unpacking your maternity pants again :).

I really like Maurices Taylor boot-cut jeans (they are in the teens sections of the store). The waist is high enough and they come in dark wash so they look somewhat dressy so I can wear them to work :) And they are only $20-$30! If you end up liking them get on Maurices mailing list because they are always emailing me 20% off coupons so that makes them even more affordable!

I can NOT pull off skinny jeans or leggings and a tunic. Not flattering on my pear shape. But here in Canada we have a store that carries some jeans that have a wide waistband with some stretch that are very much like some maternity pants. They are awesome!! No zipper and it’s a wide so it holds in some of that tummy. Not ALL of it, but it definitely lessens the muffin top. I don’t know what I’d do without them. After 4 kids in 6 years, I too am having a fashion identity crisis.

Have you met Mr. Trouser Jeans? They have a higher rise to hold in the flab, but then fall straight off the fullest part of the thigh (like a straight leg jean) to downplay any bulk.

Love these.

Oh, and by the way, most of the time I don’t even bother with jeans. I wear yoga pants almost everyday. I’ve 2 pairs of some fairly expensive ones that I love. They have been worth every penny because I can wear them all through my pregnancies (and I get huge) and anytime after. Anything that can make my butt look that good post baby is heaven sent!!

I never think to go to Maurices… so good to know!
Those jeans sound great, and what kind of yoga pants make your bum look so good? I must know :). I also feel like I am having a bit of a fashion crisis. I just feel like nothing fits or looks good on me right now.
Beulah, I am going to check those out! Thanks!

These are the jeans/pants:,default,sc.html?prefn1=silouhette&prefv1=Women
They also fit big, so you usually go down a size, which does wonders for your ego! I’d love to buy you some to try. I think you’d love them!!
These are my yoga pants:
Lulu Lemon is a Canadian company, but I think they’ve expanded to the US. They were on Oprah once. They are simply wonderful!

Kara, I love your blog. I find it pretty entertaining, since I feel like I am going through so many of the same things…mom jeans, frustrated..and not answering cell phones….Your kids are so adorable!!!!
