Question for the Ladies: What is one piece of your wardrobe that can spice up any outfit?

Me in my Boden Jacket. I like to call this my Mary Poppins jacket. I admire that Mary Poppins (I should do a whole post on Mary Poppins), and perhaps the first step towards being a little more Mary Poppinsish is owning a jacket like hers?

Aren’t you impressed with my modeling skills? Being silly comes naturally for me. Being in front of the camera does not. Being silly in front of a camera makes it bearable.

The parts of Jane and Michael Banks will be played by Sofia and Gabriel Becerra .

In celebration of tomorrow’s guest for the housewives series, I thought we would talk fashion a little this week. I don’t know a ton about fashion or care too much about following trends, but I definitely have my own style (for better or for worse). I would say that my sister Heather is the trend setter in the family. After she got her first Boden jacket, it was love. She told me that even if she took her kids to school in sweats and a t-shirt with no makeup, that she got compliments on the jacket all of the time. It sounded too good to be true. I wouldn’t have to do my hair, makeup, and I could wear whatever was most comfortable, and I would still get compliments every day?!!?? I decided to try it out, and it worked like a charm. I now own two Boden jackets (I waited until the end of the seasons and bought them both on clearance). My Mary Poppins jacket is my dress up jacket and then I have a more practical rain jacket that comes in handy in Oregon. It really is amazing how almost every single time I wear them, I always get compliments, even after owning this jacket for over 3 years. Boden makes the most amazing prints, and their jackets are so easy to spot, because the prints are so unique. My only complaint with the fit is that the arms are a little short for me, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t be a problem for the general population.

So my question to all of you, ,what is the one piece you wear that spruces up your outfit. Is it a necklace, a jacket.. maybe a scarf? Do tell please.

I like a good bag (mine are Petunia Picklebottom diaper bags right now) and big sunglasses. I love a good, big, Jackie O sized pair of sunglasses. I think they make me look casual and put together. And I don’t have to wear make-up with them.

I adore your coat…you always look sophisticated in it. I also rely on a raincoat…mine is orange, so it is quite popular in Corvallis! I’ve received compliments on it as far away as Seattle. My favorite part is I got a crazy-good deal on it at Fred Meyer and just changed out the buttons (something anyone can do to make clothing a little more unique!)

EmmaJ - May 24, 2011 - 11:37 am

Wendy, I love that idea about changing the buttons. Such a simple trick!

Shoes and sunglasses for me. I’m really not great at putting clothes together so I usually stick with t-shirts, jeans, etc. and I do not wear make up. In order to feel girly or glam I get fun sunglasses and shoes. I cried the day I threw away my pink sunglasses, literally. I couldn’t see out of them anymore they were so scratched up. My beautiful neon pink sunglasses that I paid $5 for in NYC. sniff sniff

I have one of these hats http://www.etsy.com/shop/piperandpaisley and I get compliments all the time. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m wearing something that’s actually fashionable, and people are just shocked into saying something nice.

I love that magical coat!
To make my everyday wardrobe a little more zesty, I usually opt for fun earrings or a colorful hand knit scarf.

When did you cut your hair? I LOVE it. You looks great in these pictures!

Ivy - May 24, 2011 - 9:28 pm

Kara, you look so cute in your Boden Jacket!!
I love use any accessories to smarten up, like sunglasses, luxury bag, nice shoes, ear rings, necklace, or even bracelet, depends on what purpose! But, if only can pick one item, I will definitely say a luxury bag.

kara - May 24, 2011 - 9:49 pm

Emma,
I have a haiku diaper bag that I love sporting too (as much as one can sport a diaper bag).
Wendy,
I don’t have an exact image in my head, but I feel like I have complimented you on this coat. Changing buttons IS a great idea. Even I can sew a button :)
Sunny,
RIP Sunny’s sunglasses. I have seen you sport those jewels.
Camille,
Those hats are adorable, and hello to you. I know we have met a couple of times!
Sonia,
I checked out your blog (you look familiar bye the way), and I wish I could knit my own scarves. I would love to learn to knit someday when I have more time!
Amanda,
I cut my hair a few weeks ago. Glad you like it :).
Ivy,
You are a fashion diva. Seriously, even on our walk to day you looked super stylish. What kind of luxury bags do you like?

Laurie Walker - May 25, 2011 - 7:18 am

I think earrings are my favorite fashion accessory; but now I want the jacket. I love the photos.

christa - May 25, 2011 - 8:28 am

i don’t have one particular thing…yet. but whenever i need a spruce i add accessories. usually a necklace or earrings. it makes me feel like i’ve “tried” even if i’m wearing a super casual outfit.
love the interview btw.

I love lipstick. I have some in my car, in my purse, in the junk drawer, and at my desk. If I do nothing else, I will put on lipstick…the darker the better, unless it’s sparkly.

Ivy - May 25, 2011 - 10:50 pm

It’s kinda like cliche, but I love Louis Vuitton:) I have a few LV bags from my mom. And, my first luxury bag I bought by my own was Pringle. It is a classic brand from Scotland. Right now, all money only invest in baby stuffs. Hoping I can get my next luxury bag soon. (do you hear me, Jordan. ha…)

ok I’m going out on a limb here being the only guy to comment, but lately I’m really into wearing boots. I love that they can be work, or business and that they make me an inch and a half taller!

kara - May 26, 2011 - 3:19 pm

Christa,
Do you like cosmetic jewelry more or fancy expensive?
Cate,
Can’t wait to see what lipstick you are wearing today :)!
Ivy,
You are a real fashion girl :).
Chris,
Haa.. I love your contribution. I also like that your boots make you an inch taller since you are usually only an inch taller than me :).

Sunny - May 27, 2011 - 7:11 pm

Chris, I also choose shoes that boost my height! Awesome!

Adrienne S - June 1, 2011 - 7:54 am

Kara, this jacket was the first conversation bit I ever had with you! SO funny, your lovely as always.
